Celebrating the Life and Ministry of Rhys Scott
It is with heavy hearts, yet a profound sense of hope, that we mark the passing of Rhys Scott, a man whose life was a wonderful example of faith, leadership, and an unwavering devotion to the local church. From the vibrant shores of South Africa to the bustling streets of London and Vancouver, Rhys’s legacy is etched into the hearts of the global Newfrontiers family and beyond.
A Heart for the House of God
Rhys’s journey was defined by a deep-seated "Kingdom-first" mentality. His roots in South Africa instilled in him a warmth and a spirited faith that he carried across the globe.
• Community Church Bishop's Stortford: Moving from CCK (now Emmanuel) Brighton, Rhys and Sara joined the team at CCBS. As youth leaders, they didn't just mentor; they championed young people, helping them find their own place in God's story. Rhys also brought a new dimension to the community’s worship, prioritising authenticity over performance and never fearing to "strip the band back" to keep Jesus at the centre.
• Christ Church London: Rhys and his family later moved to the UK capital to help plant CCL. Serving as both a worship team leader and an elder, his ministry was marked by a rare combination of technical excellence and authentic humility.
• Trinity Central Vancouver: Fourteen years ago, Rhys and Sara followed the call to plant Trinity Central. Rhy's leadership was characterised by wisdom, grace, and a clear vision for a church that would impact both the city and the nations.
A Legacy of Unwavering Faith
Those who served alongside Rhys remember him as a "giant of the faith." During his final two years, as he navigated a courageous battle with cancer, his team at Trinity Central noted an awe-inspiring resilience. Despite the physical toll, he remained a constant, prayerful presence in leadership, refusing to let illness dampen his deep, abiding walk with Jesus. To many, he was the embodiment of the Apostle Paul's words: a man being "poured out as a drink offering," having kept the faith until the very end.
Above his accomplishments, Rhys was a man who loved deeply. As a devoted husband, father, and friend, he had the rare quality of making you feel completely at home while simultaneously challenging you to run after Jesus with everything. He was a master listener, reflecting the quiet, attentive love of the Father he served.
The Sound of God’s Presence
For so many, Rhys will be remembered through the music he wrote and the attentive way he led worship. He never sought the spotlight for himself, viewing his immense musical gift as a tool to help the Bride of Christ see Jesus more clearly. Whether leading thousands in "stunning worship" at Newfrontiers Prayer & Fasting or as part of the team at Devoted or pastoring his local congregation, he never allowed those around him to settle for anything less than a genuine encounter with his heavenly Father.
His prophetic legacy continues to resonate through the songs he left behind, anthems that remind the church of God's joy over His people. We're still inspired by the prophetic words Rhys sang so memorably on the Revive at Stoneleigh 2000 album and he now stands fully in that glory he once sang about.
As Rhys often preached, cancer never has the final word; Jesus does. Rhys, you have fought the good fight with great courage and tenacity; you have finished your race. Well done, good and faithful servant. Until we meet again.
