Speak Life: Lessons from the Gift of Prophecy
The world we live in is incredibly loud, yet tragically silent. We are bombarded by daily digital noise, and yet so many people walk through life hungry for a voice that carries true weight and life, a voice from heaven.
In 1 Corinthians 14:1, Paul issues a direct and compelling command to the church: "Pursue love, and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy."
What is New Testament Prophecy?
Old Testament prophecy often carried warnings of judgement, with its roots at Mount Sinai. New Testament prophecy, however, is characterised by Mount Zion, a house of mercy and grace. Prophecy today should reflect the very character of Jesus, who treats people with honour, speaks with parental tenderness, and restores weary hearts. True prophecy operates within the local church to build up, encourage, and console others (1 Corinthians 14:3), rather than elevating an individual.
How can we distinguish the voice of God?
Genuine prophecy always puts the spotlight on Jesus, making Him central and magnifying the gospel. Counterfeits subtly shift focus onto human leaders or emotional hype. The Spirit also honours human dignity; He never overrides our will, which means true prophecy operates with self-control rather than producing chaotic, trance-like states. Above all, individual impressions must always be weighed against the infallible authority of the Bible, the Spirit will never contradict His written Word.
As we continue to embrace our identity as living temples of the Holy Spirit, we are invited to become ordinary 'jars of clay' carrying God's extraordinary voice into a hurting world. Let's step out with courage and humility, leaning into the Shepherd's quiet whisper and eagerly desiring His gifts particularly prophecy, so that our communities may be built up in love.
