The Church and the Transgender Movement - Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd May 2024

Biblical, cultural and pastoral perspectives to equip local churches - Online & In Person

A unique opportunity to consider the many challenges to the church from the current transgender movement. Our speakers will seek to equip us with scriptural insight, cultural understanding, medical knowledge and pastoral wisdom.

Speakers:

Martin has invited three widely experienced speakers to join him to present this module:

  • Andrew Bunt: Andrew is Emerging Generations Director at Living Out (livingout.org) and also serves the New Ground family of churches in training and resourcing. He is the author of People Not Pronouns: Reflections on Transgender Experience (Grove, 2021) and Finding Your Best Identity: A Short Christian Introduction to Identity, Sexuality and Gender (IVP, 2022).
  • Dr Julie Maxwell: Julie is based in Basingstoke with her husband and 3 (almost grown up) children. She is a Community Paediatrician as well as working part-time for Lovewise (a charity which helps parents, youth groups and schools teach children and young people about marriage, sex and relationships from a Christian perspective). Over the past 5 years she has become increasingly concerned about the rise in young people questioning their gender identity. Julie is enthusiastic about supporting young people and families to understand God's good design for life. She has been involved in youth and children's work for her whole adult life! Julie is also on the Church of England General Synod. In her spare time she can usually be found in a coffee shop or the gym!
  • Sophie Spital: Sophie is a member of Emmanuel Church Brighton and works as a video editor for the Youtube channel Triggernometry.
  • Martin Charlesworth: Martin Charlesworth lives in Shrewsbury with his wife Jane and has three grown-up daughters. He is part of the leadership team at Barnabas Community Church, is the founder of Jubilee+ and now works with a number of church-based charities in the UK.
